From June 26th to June 30th, 2023, Mr. Ben Leung, Ms. Esther Law, and Ms. Sammy Lee accompanied twenty students for the Sport Climbing Level 1 Course held by YMCA at KPCC. The venue features an 18-meter outdoor climbing wall, which is the tallest one in Hong Kong. The aim of this experience was to let students challenge themselves and enhance their physical abilities outside the campus. The course included lectures of 3 hours and practice sessions of 8 hours. Students had to attend 100% of the course and pass the examination to apply for the "Level 1 Sport Climbing Certificate" issued by China Hong Kong Mountaineering and Climbing Union Limited (CHKMCU). The course covered topics such as an introduction to sport climbing, sport climbing safety precautions, etc. During the three-day course, students supported and encouraged one another. At the beginning, some of them were too scared to climb up and fall from the wall. However, with time and practice, they overcame their fears and passed the exam. All of them received the certificates and qualification. Some even succeeded in reaching the top of the 18-meter climbing wall at last. They could even safely belay other climbers safely too. With the guidance of YMCA trainers and the encouragement from the teachers, this course was a big success. The mutual support among all the participates made the experience even more rewarding. Climbing is more than just a physical activity. It also requires mental strength, determination, and teamwork. This experience has taught our students such important life skills.
